Tool Care Through the Seasons: A Gardener's Ritual

Good tools last when they're respected. Whether you're working with a trowel, a hand fork, or a full-sized Dutch hoe, regular maintenance keeps them sharp, strong, and safe. It also connects you to the quieter, slower traditions of the garden.

After each use, tools are brushed clean and dried. Mud left to harden can weaken steel over time and rot wooden handles. A simple wire brush or stiff bristle brush is often enough. In wetter months, drying tools before storage is especially important.

Each season brings its own rituals. In spring, tools are checked and sharpened. In summer, they're used often and cleaned regularly. Autumn is a time for inspection-tightening handles, oiling joints, and replacing worn parts. Winter is for deep care: sanding handles, applying linseed oil, and sharpening blades to a fine edge.

At Heligan, tools are hung in the potting shed in order, always ready for the next task. The potting shed itself becomes a place of reflection-where plans are made, notebooks are filled, and tools are passed from hand to hand.
