Beneath the Wisteria: A Seasonal Moment in the Gardens
Share
At this time of year, the path between the Flower Garden and the Sundial Garden becomes something else entirely. Wisteria, with its softly cascading blooms, spills across the arches and pillars twisting quietly in every direction, as if reaching toward the light.
Theres a brief window when the flowers are at their fullest. Their pale mauve and lavender tones catch in the sunlight, their scent settling gently on the air. Visitors pause beneath the canopysome with cameras, others with closed eyesand for a moment, the gardens seem hushed, almost listening.
Though wisteria often blooms once a year, there are years when a second, quieter flowering arrives later in the season. At Heligan, the plants seem to follow their own rhythm. The gardeners know them wellwhen to train them, when to let them roam a little.
There isnt always a need for interpretation. Sometimes a flower in bloom simply asks to be noticed.
And here, along this walkway, surrounded by structured borders and sun-warmed walls, the wisteria offers a moment of softnessa thread of the seasons poetry written in scent and shape and colour.
